GOEuro Travel Writing Contest 2014

UK: The Land Rover Bursary run by the RGS-IBG on behalf of Land Rover provides funding of up to £30,000 (a bursary of £15,000 and a discretionary fund to cover essential expedition costs up to an additional £15,000) and the use of a 110 Defender vehicle to help the successful participants undertake a journey with a geographical purpose. The loan vehicle must be essential to the journey, and the recipient team will be expected to share their experiences by documenting the journey in engaging ways, including digital/web-based media. Applicants will need to demonstrate how the journey goes ‘above and beyond’ their usual experiences, limits or boundaries and how the journey will promote a wider understanding or enjoyment of geography. Application deadline is November 30, 2014.

France: Outstanding midcareer professionals in the arts and humanities are encouraged to apply for residencies from the Brown Foundation Fellows Program at the Dora Maar House in France. Applications must be submitted online by October 15 for fellowship terms beginning February 1 or after and ending no later than June 30.

Orcas Island, Washington: Writers, Artists + Scholars invited to apply for Artsmith residency at Kangaroo House B&B, Jan 4-11, 2015, includes lodging+some meals. $35 app fee; deadline: 10/1. Note: I was one of the 2013 writing fellows at this wonderful residency (that’s me in the 1st pic, feeding the seal – ha), highly recommend! The island is stunning (my favorite of the San Juans) and the B&B owners are well-traveled and lovely, inspiring residency hosts: Jill’s a published poet and writer (among many other things) and Charles’ fantastic culinary creations will be one of the highlights of your stay.

South America: Share your favorite travel moment with Tucan Travel to win an adventure to various destinations every eight weeks for the rest of the year.

California: Emerging Voices is a literary fellowship that aims to provide new writers, who lack access, with the tools they will need to launch a professional writing career. During the eight month fellowship in Los Angeles, each Emerging Voices Fellow participates in a professional mentorship, hosted Q & A evenings with prominent local authors, a series of master classes focused on genre, a voice class, a volunteer project, and several public readings. The fellowship includes a $1,000 stipend. Deadline to apply: August 11, 2014.

India or China: Writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and dramatic prose invited to apply for the M Literary Residency, in Bangalore, India or Shanghai, China. There are no nationality restrictions, however, applicants should be over 21 years old and write in English. Unpublished authors and past applicants are eligible. The successful applicants will be provided transportation costs to and from the residencies and a total stipend of US$1,000 to cover additional living costs during their stay. Applicants are responsible for their travel/medical insurance and visas.

Columbus, Ohio: Writers invited to apply for the annual John E. Nance Writer-in-Residence of four weeks housed in a two-bedroom apartment in the boyhood home of author and New Yorker cartoonist James Thurber, and is designed to provide a writer with the gift of time to develop a work in progress. The resident will receive a stipend of $4000, and will be available for at least three community outreach opportunities such as readings and teaching writing classes offered by Thurber House. For the current application round, the work may be fiction, or creative non-fiction including memoir. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and over 18 years of age. Applicants must have had a book published by a traditional publisher within the last three years and have another work under contract or in progress. Apply by June 2, 2014.

Illinois: Writers invited to apply for the Ernest Hemingway Writer-in-Residency, a free one-year residency at the historic Queen Anne house in Oak Park, IL where Hemingway was born and the place where the author wrote many of his epic works. Deadline to apply: June 1, 2014.

Kentucky: Writers invited to apply for the 2014 Bernheim Writing Residency sponsored by Sarabande Books, the Baltic Writing Residency, and Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. Participants in the summer residency spend two to six weeks at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, an idyllic 14,000-acre nature preserve near Louisville. Each resident lives in a private, fully-equipped cottage on the grounds and enjoys access to Bernheim’s extensive forest, gardens and arboretum. Residents offer two public readings or discussions during their tenure and may devote the rest of their time to writing in a pristine, natural setting. Deadline to apply: May 31, 2014

Worldwide: Apply to be one of six Bosch Global Explorers to travel around the world from July 20–August 6, reporting on exciting technology at six locations: London, Panama, San Francisco, Shanghai, Singapore and a mystery destination. Deadline: May 16, 2014.

Cincinnati, Ohio: Love pie? Join Allegiant at CVG airport on May 15 at 3pm for the PIE Take-Off Event to win two free tickets on the inaugural flight to Tampa Bay/St. Pete, Florida, plus three hotel nights at the acclaimed Postcard Inn from May 15-18. The winner should come prepared to depart CVG at 5:25 p.m. on the day of the contest.

Three applicants will be chosen to receive a World Nomads Travel Writing Scholarship to attend a two-day writing workshop (Aug 16-17) in Berlin taught by veteran Lonely Planet author Alex Leviton to learn the essentials of travel writing before setting off on an individually designed 10-day road trip across Europe (Aug 18-27) where they will write about anything and everything they encounter along the way. The top shortlisted entries will receive enrollment in the MatadorU Travel Writing mini-course (with 3 months unlimited access to the course).
