Hawai’i Volcanoes + Big Bend: 2 New National Park Artist Residencies to Apply For Now

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

NPAF Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park Artist-in-Residence (December 2015)

Deepen your art in a volcanic wonderland! The National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) in association with Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park of the National Park Service now offers a December residency in Hawai’i. The volcanoes on the island of Hawai’i , Mauna Loa and Kīlauea, sacred to the Hawaiian people, have long attracted artists who were driven to capture the unearthly glows and dangerous beauty of the flows of molten rock that run all around the park boundaries. This residency offers a unique opportunity for the artist to witness at close range and be inspired by the vital creative unpredictable force of nature itself as it chaotically surges and erases and remakes its own work and humbles human endeavor (and a few state highways) by comparison. This park is a endless laboratory of mighty natural forms that will astound you.

This one-month residency in December 2015 offers:

  • On-site residence in the heart of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, a unique park that contains two active volcanoes inside its boundaries.
  • A venue for a single workshop or public lecture about the artwork or process. If the Artist is interested in additional public interaction or performance, they may propose their ideas in the application.
  • A chance to donate Artwork, through NPAF, to the National Parks Collection and to become a part of America’s National Heritage.
  • No Artist Studio available this term. Artist must work plein air or in their lodging.
  • No residency fee.

International artists may apply, but must have all of the proper visas/paperwork for the program of their own accord.

Applications

$50 app fee for 3 images; $5 each image thereafter or $70 for video or audio clip (up to 3 minutes). Deadline to apply: September 20, 2015.
