Camp Denali and North Face Lodge – Posted by jobs@campdenali.com | 22 Nov 2017
Park Rd, Healy, AK 99743, USA Full-Time Jobs

Job Description

Culinary professionals: Looking for a unique experience in an unparalleled setting?

Camp Denali and North Face Lodge, located in the heart of Denali National Park, Alaska, could be right for you. This is a lifestyle, not just a summer job.

We are committed to serving wholesome and flavorful food, expertly presented, and prepared using the highest quality local and organic ingredients. A team environment characterizes our kitchens. We emphasize cooperation over hierarchy, and collaboration over autonomy.  The reward for our dedicated work is the most sought after view in Denali National Park: the mountain, framed by the windows of our dining halls, each clear day of the summer.

This is a seasonal position at our very remote lodge, which requires availability May 24th – September 13th, 2018.  We ask for a two-season commitment to work with us in 2019, as well. This schedule and commitment opens up the opportunity to use your winter months for travel, alternate seasonal work, or volunteer and adventure possibilities.

The Sous Chef position is a food service leadership role.  Responsibilities include:

  • filling the role of either Breakfast or Dinner Cook 2-3 days each week
  • managing the kitchens 2 days each week, on the Executive Chef’s days off
  • training and mentoring staff in other Food Service roles
  • communicating clearly and consistently with staff
  • promoting a collaborative team environment
  • completing administrative tasks and accounting for ingredients
  • maintaining high standards of quality and cleanliness
  • being responsible for food preparation tasks
  • washing dishes and maintaining a clean workspace
  • promoting our mission statement
  • being an engaged member of our small community

Our dining hall, like so many homes, is the place our guests come to engage and connect with one another. Over nutritious, thoughtfully prepared meals, our guests share and reflect on the inspirational experience of being immersed in the beautiful backcountry of Denali.  By exceeding our guests’ expectations, our cooks are an essential part of our operation.

We’re looking for individuals who are excited about being part of a community and interested in working in a cooperative and professional kitchen.  You’ll do well here if you also have a desire to explore Denali National Park, disconnect from technology, work toward living sustainably, and share in creating an experience for our guests that is beyond compare.

Please note that our lodge is a 6-hour bus ride from the nearest restaurant, hotel, movie theater, store, or ATM.  Most of our staff choose not to leave our property for the duration of the summer, apart from hiking, biking, or canoeing adventures in the park.  There is no cell phone service, but we do have pay phones in public places available for use, as well as moderately reliable internet (at browsing, but not streaming or downloading speeds) in common spaces.

All staff live on-site for the duration of our summer season.  All new and most returning staff share housing with one or two roommates.  Housing varies from bunks in a tent frame cabin, to a shared room very similar to a dorm room, to a 2-3 person hard-sided cabin.

Perks of the job are innumerable, and the compensation can hardly be boiled down to a number.  Staff work five 10-hour days each week, such that the daily pay range is $125.95 – $145/day, with two hours each day paid at time-and-a-half. Gratuities are pooled and divided equally among staff, averaging more than $500/month for each staff member.

Housing and meals are provided at no cost, and with nowhere to spend money on-site, this is a great opportunity to walk away with all of your savings from the summer intact.  A travel stipend rounds out your compensation, and is paid upon completion of a full season.

Lastly, the experience of working in this community, connecting with this beautiful place, and experiencing what it’s like to work for an organization that is the best at what it does is invaluable.
