Job Description

FT Content Distribution (Social) Manager, BudgetTravel.com

The Content Distribution Manager is a key player in maximizing the impact of BudgetTravel.com content across social media, partner sites that may “pick up” our stories regularly and link back to BudgetTravel.com, and via industry tools such as Google Analytics, ChartBeat, KeyWee, and OutBrain. The Content Distribution Manager will also play a key role in making metrics-based recommendations for future content such as travel narratives, destination round-ups, travel news, product reviews, hotel and restaurant reviews, how-to, and other topics; the goal will always be to build and retain audience.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who “owns” the fast-paced distribution of BudgetTravel.com content and plays a role in the conception of future content with audience deveopment in mind.

This position can be based in either our New York or Franklin, TN office.

Key Result Areas:

  • Develops BudgetTravel.com’s content-distribution strategy across platforms, reaching out to potential online partner sites, executing a best-in-class social media strategy (including the development of new social media accounts as appropriate).
  • Understands the unique role each platform can play so that content across online, e-newsletter, social media, video, and television appearances is all aimed at building and retaining audience.
  • Helps to conceives content ideas with an eye to maximizing impact across all relevant platforms .
  • Owns the monitoring of site and social media metrics, communicating with Content Team regularly so that all editors benefit from the an understanding of the daily ups and downs of content distribution.
  • Liaise with Editor in Chief on a daily basis to assess traffic successes and challenges.

Ethical Policy Compliance

  • Ensure you are familiar with and understand our Ethical Policy and how it may impact your dealings with 3rd parties/partners.
  • Ensure partners and potential partners who fall within the high risk category understand the Lonely Planet Ethical Policy requirements.
  • Work with the General Manager, Global Operations to ensure appropriate research and due diligence is undertaken to determine whether high risk partners you deal with are compliant before products are manufactured, services contracted and performed and events held.
  • Proactively dealing with issues arising and act as a conduit between the Ethical steering team and the 3rd party.

Teamwork + Communication

  • Work as part of the Budget Travel/Lonely Planet community to create a positive, tolerant and harmonious work environment.
  • Deal with people in a helpful, courteous and respectful manner.
  • Assume trust – be honest, approachable and responsive.

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent editorial experience. 

  • 3 years of content distribution and/or social media experience. 

  • Big-picture thinker, adept at conceiving content ideas that reflect the brand’s voice and style, audience-development and -retention tactics, and the overarching goal of growing our audience across all platforms.
  • Expert communication skills, both written and verbal. 

  • High attention to detail and ability in managing multiple projects simultaneously. 

  • Proven ability to work calmly and maintain good judgment in fast-paced, metrics-driven environment.
  • Creative and initiative-focused with a collaborative and flexible approach to problem solving.

Desirable:

FT Associate Editor, BudgetTravel.com

The Associate Editor is a key content creator across all platforms (online, e-newsletter, social media, video, television appearances), turning travel news, trends, current events, and popular culture into engaging, upbeat travel stories in a fast-paced environment. The Associate Editor will execute travel narratives, destination round-ups, travel news, product reviews, hotel and restaurant reviews, how-to, and other topics; s/he will be comfortable writing copy and producing visual content in collaboration with the photo and video departments and also assigning content to freelance writers as needed.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who “owns” the fast-paced travel news bucket at BudgetTravel.com, adept at researching and writing travel content, collaborating as needed with photo and video editors.

Key Result Areas:

  • Creates new travel content in a fast-paced, metrics-driven online environment that often requires quick turnaround from conception to final publication. Some content will be assigned by BudgetTravel.com’s Editor in Chief and Senior Editor, some content conception will be “owned” by the Associate Editor.
  • Conceives content ideas with an eye to maximizing impact across all relevant platforms (stories that will resonate online, in our e-newsletter, on social media, possibly in short branded videos, and in television appearances).
  • Owns the daily publication of travel news (airfare deals, current events and popular culture trends that affect travel, weather, new deals and product launches, etc.) as part of a multi-platform strategy to build audience across online, e-newsletter, social media, and television appearances.
  • Proficient in conceiving and executing social media badges and short videos inspired by BudgetTravel.com content and brand strengths.
  • Liaise with Photo and Video teams as needed to produce visual content in the brand’s voice and style.
  • Monitor audience development and retention across online and social media platforms on a daily basis in collaboration with Content Team as a way to assess and improve brand voice, relevant topics of interest, and other important tactics.
